Städte in Veränderung

ENGLISH VERSION

Cities in transition

Change triggers emotion: anxiety and anger, as well as joy, nostalgia and curiosity. Change is never merely good or bad – it challenges and questions constructs of identity. Leipzig is undergoing a process of transformation: as the fastest-growing city in Germany, it has experienced incomparable development from extreme shrinkage to extreme expansion. It provides a tangible example of the opportunities and risks inherent in the densification of cities: long-neglected sites disappear, people become displaced and other infrastructure is built out, enriching the urban cultural environment – a contemporary phenomenon, often seen, always controversial.

Festival STADTTFINDEN

The STADTTFINDEN Festival deals with the city in the 21st century. For this purpose, the GLASFABRIK site serves as a laboratory space and as an object of reflection. Local, national and international participants have been invited to consider, test out and present the idea of a “city of coproduction” in workshops, lectures, artistic interventions and discussions. The festival can be understood as a platform where different ideas are theoretically and experimentally processed, discussed and presented to the wider public. More than this, the festival will build connections to local communities, advancing the idea of long-term, communal utilisation of the GLASFABRIK. The program is divided into two main components: LAB and WORKSHOPS. These are embedded in an accompanying program that offers enough space for social exchange as well as social and cultural events.

Glasfabrik LAB

In the LAB, artists, architects and designers working in interdisciplinary teams will implement project ideas relating to the subject of the growing city on site throughout the entire festival. The resulting work will be presented to the public at the OPEN END ABSCHLUSSFEST (Open End Closing Party) on Saturday, 09.09.2017.

Workshops

In WORKSHOPS experts will share their knowledge of local and international urban transformation processes with the public and provide space for discussion. Concepts of co-production in city planning as well as the understanding of the city as an organism will be discussed. Local and international stakeholders will provide input regarding the latest growth process in Leipzig compared to growth processes in other German and international cities. The question how urban public space is de!ned by its users and who is (un-)welcome and/or (in-)visible will be addressed.

The aim is to strike up a conversation with people concerning the transformation process currently underway in Leipzig, the neighbourhood and also the place of the Glasfabrik itself; people from the local environs of the Glasfabrik as well as from other districts in Leipzig and from other places. Visitors, experts and other stakeholders are welcome to participate in the workshops and panel discussions.

Entry is free. To avoid disappointment on the day, please register for the workshops under: anmeldung@glasfabrik.org.

The festival will take place on the former industrial site of the Glasfabrik Leipzig which will be revamped in the coming years. Accordingly, the STADTTFINDEN festival will serve as a prelude to the long-term development of the Glasfabrik.

Organisation

The organizer of the festival is D21 Art Space Leipzig, a non-institutional project-based space and network, and Octagon e.V. – Raum für Architektur und Urbanes, platform for architectural mediation in Leipzig.

Since 2006, the D21 Art Space Leipzig has organised temporary art exhibitions with international artists. At it, interdisciplinary approaches questioning society matters are regular parts.

OCTAGON e.V. – Raum für Architektur und Urbanes, founded in 2014, focuses on the debate on social aspects of the built environment. Exhibitions and lectures form the basis to encourage a dialogue in Leipzig.
